Dirty Work at Diamond Park

On Friday 23 September, with the sun shining down, a determined band of volunteers worked hard to begin the transformation of Diamond Park. Paths were cleared, benches were freed from brambles and overgrown shrubs, and lorry loads of garden waste were taken away.

Everyone at Big Local is very grateful to all the fantastic volunteers who helped to make the day a great success – and special thanks to Rob who worked his socks off!

Big Local is getting closer in its plans to spend the Million!

Help by joining the Partnership or applying for one of the governance roles.

Posted 10/10/2014: Big Local has reached an exciting stage. Over the last 2 years, volunteer residents have been working hard to consult with the community, draft a local profile of the area and begin negotiations about developments the community would like to see on Birchwood.  All this preparatory work needed to be completed before we are able to access any of the £1m awarded to the communities of Birchwood.

On 6th November, we will be establishing a Partnership Board and electing a Chair, Vice-Chair and Secretary for the Big Local project.  Up to 20 residents can sit as members of the Board and we would like to invite those interested to attend the meeting on 6th November or, if they are unable to attend, inform us by 24 October that they would like to be involved as a member of the Partnership Board.  Residents can still sit on subgroups, even if they are not a member of the Partnership Board, so there are still lots of opportunities to be involved.

The meeting will be held at Learning Communities (Birchwood Shopping Centre) at 7pm on 6th November.  If you would like to be Chair, Vice Chair or Secretary, please write a paragraph explaining the skills you feel you would bring to this role and submit this to jeanne.bain@developmentplus.org.uk  by 24 October 2014.  This address should also be used if you are unable to attend on 6th November and would like to nominate yourself to sit on the Partnership Board.
In the event of query, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Walking Football

Birchwood Big Local in partnership with Lincoln City F.C. have arranged 8 Walking Football sessions at the Birchwood Leisure centre commencing Thursday 23rd October at 7pm and each Thursday at 7 pm to 18th December.

Walking Football creates a safe, relaxed environment for the over 50s to take part in the great game once again. The sessions have a casual approach, a light warm up followed by a small sided game and provide the opportunity to develop not only your physical health - coordination, balance, aim, power and flexibility - but a chance to improve the mental healthy with the social aspect of the session.

Whether you have played before or if you just fancy a new kind of exercise walking football sessions cater for all abilities.

You're never too old.

Birchwood Big Local Nordic Walking starts this month

A new activity starts this month. On 27th September Birchwood Big Local is running the first session of Nordic Walking. The activity is funded by LN6 Active and initially will last for 6 weeks.

Dates of the sessions are: 27.09, 04.10, 11.10, 18.10, 25.10, 01.11, 08.11.

Nordic walking works your upper and lower body exercising 90% of your body’s muscles.

It tones legs, buttocks, shoulders and the backs of your arms.

Nordic walking burns more calories than ordinary walking, but feels easier due to the poles.

It increases your upper body endurance.

It helps to engage the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles which provide core stability.

It is outdoors in the fresh air.

It is very sociable -  you can meet new people and chat as you exercise.

Nordic Walking sessions start on

Saturday 27th September 2014

Meet 2pm outside entrance of

 Birchwood Leisure Centre

Session approx 1 hour. Please wear suitable footwear (trainers or stout shoes but not boots).

Poles provided. £2.50 per session.

BIRCHWOOD BIG LOCAL AT THE COLTS FUN DAY

Birchwood Big Local volunteers attended this annual event.

The aim was to keep everyone updated and to recruit new residents to the Birchwood Big Local team.

We were extremely lucky with the weather, it was a dry day and lots of people attended and enjoyed themselves.

We had two games on offer with a chance to win either £10 or £20 for an initial cost of 20p.

It became quite competitive between friends and families.

There were two winners on the day.

Hopefully we got our message across in a fun way.

Look out for future volunteer events in 2014.

PLANTLOCKS New cycle storage for Birchwood

Birchwood Big Local Green Spaces subgroup  introduces plantlocks -new cycling storage for the Birchwood community.

Our group have been busy looking around the estate for  areas that needed somewhere safe to lock

a bike.

Access LN6 have a great bike locking scheme, one of the types

of lock on offer is Plant Lock.

As a group we thought they would work well for us at Big Local/Green Spaces.

We asked people last year what they would like to see around the area.

One of the things was better use of open space, more plants and flowers around the estate.

Plant locks solve the bike locking problem creating a safer environment, they also look nice as we can put plants inside.

The Green Spaces group will maintain the plant locks, keeping them looking good throughout the year.

We are also planning a bulb planting day for the autumn.

The locations for these will be the junctions onto the estate.

Would you like to join us and help us improve the local area?

Big Local bulb planting

Birchwood Big Local volunteers supported by volunteers from Lincolnshire Co-op planted over 200 flowering bulbs at the entrance to Birchwood  shopping centre on 1 April 2014.

It was a lovely day for planting bulbs. We planted bluebells, snowdrops and aconites. The grounds near the shopping centre will be transformed into a blaze of spring colour thanks to the efforts of volunteers.

This is one of Birchwood Big Local projects to create a lasting change in the area using the £1m lottery funding. Big Local funding is an exciting 10-year programme with the aim of making a significant difference to the local area and long-lasting positive change to the lives of people living and working in our area.

Birchwood Big Local member Wendy Parry said: "Making the shopping centre entrance look nicer is just one of the first positive things we can do that will have a visual impact.

Hopefully people will drive in and see the pretty flowers and will come on board with us. It’s great to have extra hands and we’re very happy to have had the help of the Lincolnshire  Co-op volunteers.”

Look out for future volunteer events in 2014.

Big Local Taster Event – one step closer to the £1 million

On Saturday 15th March we held a Big Local Taster Event – “One step closer to the £1million.”  A number of residents came along to hear about the background of the Birchwood Big Local and to participate in looking at how we can get one step closer to the £1million.

Four groups within Birchwood Big Local were presented to our guests .

The Communications Group outlined their aim of communicating Birchwood Big Local information to all residents using our website, Facebook page, regular updates within the Birchwood Buzz and through local media.

The Green Spaces Group discussed the possibility of  “growing” projects (planting bulbs and other flowers) to bring colour to the green spaces of Birchwood.

Children and Young People Group spent some time identifying the needs of children and young people.

Whereas the Events Group were looking at potential community projects and activities to make Birchwood a brighter place to live.

It was a great time to meet with a number of new and enthusiastic residents. It was especially good to hear their suggestions and ideas over a lunch in a brainstorming session.

There are still plenty of opportunities for residents to get involved whatever their skills. Please contact us with your ideas and suggestions. All ideas and people are welcome!

Thank you to Access LN6 for donating this prize…we really appreciate your support.
The children who came along had a great time and we saw some fantastic creations being made on the craft table.
